First rate style at Second Time Around
Rachel Solar, Fashion Editor

Marisa Mac Naughton is a manager at the upscale consignment store, Second Time Around. Her hip, au courant take on preppy style is a perfect example of putting a modern spin on classics.

BostonNOW: Describe your personal style.

Marisa Mac Naughton: Always polished but never boring. I like to wear great-fitting basics mixed with fashionable pieces.

BN: Who are your favorite designers?

MMN: Marc Jacobs uses the best colors, cuts and patterns and has a great sense of humor. Vince has great knits and staples. Also, I love denim by Seven for all Mankind. I am always in denim, and they make the best fitting jeans and never do anything too funky or trendy so I can wear them forever.

BN: What are your favorite preppy pieces?

MMN: Diane von Furstenberg black blouse with ruffles down the front; BCBG Maxazria black leather knee-high equestrian-style boots; Cropped trench from Zara; Diane von Furstenberg black and white patterned shirt dress

BN: What's the appeal of prep for you?

MMN: Preppy pieces help me look pulled together. I am the daughter of a former stewardess and the product of a private prep school with a dress code so I was taught at an early age to take getting dressed seriously. Also, preppy clothes are generally structured and fitted. I am petite so I get lost in baggier styles such as dolman sleeves or bohemian looks.

BN: What are your favorite stores in Boston?

MMN: Second Time Around of course! I shop at all of our locations at a regular basis. In fact, it is very hard to shop anywhere else once you have worked here. You just can't beat the bargains and the selection. I love to go to Downtown Crossing. Filene's Basement, DSW, Marshalls and TJ Maxx are all in one place! And, of course, I love to shop at Marc Jacobs. I shop both Marc by Marc Jacobs and the Collection store, but it is usually just to look because a lot of it makes it way to my store and I get first dibs since I am reviewing consignment!

BN: What's the trick to making keep preppy elements from looking costumey?

MMN: Head-to-toe preppy clothe will leave you looking like you are in a school uniform. Mix in some unexpected elements like chunky jewelry, a leather jacket or Chuck Taylors, which are a fashion staple of mine lately.
