Trend Report: Sheer Genius

As we start to say goodbye to the snow (seriously, snow, it’s time for you to melt already) and hello to the sunshine, we also will bid adieu to our sweaters and embrace new, lighter clothing trends—in particular, sheer clothing. This spring, sheer is absolutely everywhere, from skirts, to dresses to blouses. Sure, the trend may seem a little daunting and risqué, but when worn correctly, sheer can be classy and cute for any occasion—from a night out to the office.

Wearing sheer in the workplace may first strike you as a little inappropriate, and in some cases, that’s true. For most working women, wearing a sheer blouse with nothing but a bra underneath it is definitely not fit for an office environment. However, that doesn’t mean that we should write it off entirely. There are still many ways to rock spring sheer without getting disapproving side-glances from your coworkers. The biggest tip to wearing a sheer blouse in the office is layering. Try a sheer button down blouse in a pastel color (I love pale pink or baby blue) and then layer an oversized boyfriend blazer on top. The blazer will cover up the more risqué parts, but will still show off the sheer material underneath. Finish the look with a pair of cropped pants and a nude pump. Going out after work? Just take trade the blazer for a leather jacket and you’ll have the perfect outfit for post-work cocktails. Think you’ll get a little too toasty under the blazer? Don a cute nude or cream colored cami underneath your blouse—the cami will allow you to show off your gorgeous sheer blouse without showing too much skin.

Rocking a sheer ensemble for the evening allows for a little more versatility. Without workplace restraints, don’t be afraid to wear a sheer blouse with a flirty lace bra or a fun bandeau underneath! Still a little nervous about sheer, even at night? Don’t just limit yourself to tops—dresses are also a great way to sport the sheer trend. Try a cocktail dress that has a sheer neckline and sleeves—you can show off your arms without revealing too much. If you’re a little more adventurous, bring attention to your legs in a sheer maxi skirt with a short slip underneath. The short slip will add an opaque contrast to the skirt without fully covering your legs completely as most maxi skirts do.

The next time you spot a sheer top in your favorite pastel color, don’t let the thin fabric deter you! You can still rock this hot spring trend for absolutely any occasion.

This Fall: Lush Textures and Sleek Silhouettes

To embrace the fall is to embrace everything warm and sumptuous, from thick, lavish fabrics to simmering Crock-Pots. This year it’s all about the balance between sleek and luscious, with top trends ranging from sheer details to menswear for women. So break out the rich colors and get ready to sink into fall.

The signature prints of fall get away from summertime florals and dive right into thick houndstooth and collegiate plaid. This fall is all about taking these more traditional patterns and channeling them in menswear-inspired garments (like the below right photo from L.A.M.B.). From full structured suits to box-pleated miniskirts, the masculine elements are gaining momentum and giving feminine garments a more stylish edge. Try this trend by accenting masculine pieces with feminine details, such as a sparkly statement necklace or a tie-bow blouse (like below photo on the left from Rachel Zoe).

If you’re more of the sleek and silky school of thought, then now is your chance to shine. Leather and sheer details flooded the runways, with sheer sleeves and leather skirts becoming staples for fall. If you choose the more exposed sheer option, you can take this trend from bold to bolder depending on your trend comfort (like the below right photo from Milly). Go dramatic by choosing a dress with a full sheer overlay (shown below left by Jill Stuart), or try out the trend with sheer cut-out details to take your LBD to the next level.

If you choose to go the leather route, you can also try it out with details - such as leather trim on a jacket - or go with individual leather pieces - such as a peplum top or a skirt (shown below left from 10 Crosby by Derek Lam). For a more dramatic take on the trend, go with a leather minidress or full suit (shown below right from Rachel Zoe), accented with a statement necklace, earrings or double cuffs.

So curl up for a quiet night in a cozy sweater or turn up the volume with a leather minidress, fall is here!

Summer Fashion Trends 2011

It is only the middle of May, but with this dreary weather, who isn’t ready for the summer heat and summer shopping?!

Sophisticated 70’s

It looks like the 70’s are back! High-waist pants and bell bottoms are coming back in. For a more sophisticated look, pair these pants with a neat, silk blouse. Add rings, bangles and pendants to your outfit for a 70’s boho look. To complement this 70’s look you may want to try a long flowing hairstyle, or be more daring in a sleek bob.

Ladylike 60’s

The 60’s are making a return this summer with a very classic, feminine look. The late 50’s, early 60’s featured a very ladylike, feminine style. The mid 60’s are when bright patterns and mini skirts came about. Longer, wider, more comfortable skits pair nicely with a floral top. Lightweight fabrics and light colors make for a cool and comfortable hippie chic outfit. Cat eye sunglasses are also very fashionable this season.

Biker Chic

Military chic is slowly fading out as the biker chic trend takes over. Retire your military jacket and invest in a classic motorcycle jacket. You can wear a motorcycle with just about anything, and you are guaranteed to make a statement. Try some leather pants with your jacket. A quilted-leather skirt is also very biker chic. Another statement piece for the motorcycle look is the biker boot – they shouldn’t be hard to come by in stores this season.

Sheer Maxi Dress

Since the maxi dress has now become a part of almost every woman’s wardrobe, why not make it sheer? Keep it classy, but go sheer!

One-Pieces

Jumpsuits and playsuits are a popular trend this summer. Anything one-piece is in style. Several styles of one-pieces include overalls, evening, tailored, flowing, sporty, and basic. Jumpsuits come in various lengths that serve for different ways to wear them.

Crop Top

Hit the gym to get ready for the crop top trend! But don’t worry, not all crop tops are meant to show off your entire stomach - there are elegant crop tops that show only a little bit of your midriff with creative cutaway detailing.

Kitten Heel

Going along with the 60’s look, kitten heels are making a return. Although they are comfortable and complement a ladylike outfit, they are clearly not as sexy as other heels: “Kitten heels are like the ugly step-sister of the heel family.”  What do you think??

Clogs

In contrast to the kitten heel, wooden clogs are popular this summer. The chunky awkward clogs are becoming increasingly popular. Maybe they aren’t as uncomfortable as we remember?

We refuse to let this weather get us down!  We would rather get ahead of ourselves and prep for the summer sun.  Until next time fashioniSTAs….
