FashioniSTA File: SAG Awards 2013
Jan 28th
Ah, the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The awards show with a little more street cred than the commercial Oscars, but just enough class to make the red carpet an interesting mix. You can always tell when a celeb is saving her (or his) big fashion coming out moment for the Oscars, which makes this event a truly stylish warm-up. Here we count down the top five best style stars of the night.
5. Tina Fey in Oscar de la Renta.
This was the absolute best choice Tina could have picked having just come off her moment at the Golden Globes. The elegant shape and flattering color was pushed into the “best dressed” category with that belt that only Oscar the Great could have designed.
4. Nina Dobrev in Elie Saab.
This is someone who gets it right every time she steps onto any type of carpet (I’m pretty sure she looks even good when she goes to Ikea). Hot pink is a pretty daring color, especially with the abundance of red, but the sleek silhouette with the subtle cut-outs made this look a home run.
3. Viola Davis in Monique Lhuillier.
One of the more under-the-radar stars at this year’s SAGs, it would have truly been a shame to have not noticed her on the carpet. She looked pretty amazing last year during the wave of The Help, but she managed to parlay her style stardom into this year’s awards as well.
2. Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior.
This look was so fantastic I literally couldn’t breathe. From the polished architectural details to her asymmetrical haircut, there is really only one word for this: obsessed.
1. Navy Blue on Everyone.
No seriously, everyone wore navy blue. Which means Carmen Electra and Jessica Lange were both wearing the same color. The other notable list of celebs donning this color included Jennifer Lawrence in Dior, Amanda Seyfried in Zac Posen, and Nicole Kidman in Vivienne Westwood. Clearly navy came in as the winner of the evening, with the biggest comeback since school uniforms were invented.
See you all in two weeks to dissect the Grammys!

Our Favorite Trends at New York Fashion Week
Sep 18th
Just when we started to embrace fall’s temperatures and wardrobes (Layers! Cashmere!) – New York Fashion Week had to come along and tantalize us with some of the sleekest and chicest spring/summer 2013 offerings we can think of. The next six months can’t fly by quick enough so we can get our hands our favorite NYFW pieces.
Who says sequins are for evening only? Us fashioniSTAs love everything that shimmers, like this Rachel Zoe. With its silver sheen and a hint of gold, we can’t wait to incorporate this top into our everyday wardrobes. Adding a bit of bling at the supermarket, on the subway, or at a dinner date never felt so easy. (We love it paired with Zoe’s crisp seafoam green shorts and oversized cat-eye sunnies too!)
Amping up our arsenal of summertime day dresses is one of the best things about spring (along with fresh flowers and paper-thin cardigans). Victoria Beckham’s new line, Victoria Victoria Beckham, makes our selection that much better for 2013. With a blended watercolor-inspired print, and a bold pop of cobalt blue, this dress will be one suitable the first al fresco brunch of the year. Perfect for brunch with your girlfriends, throw on some sandals and an aforementioned paper-thin cardigan and you’re good to go.
A common fashioniSTA dilemma? How to dress for warm weather to the office. Thanks to Z Spoke by Zac Posen (left) and Juicy Couture (right), short suits are on-trend in a big way. With their bold prints and vibrant colors, we’re able to bring tailored professionalism to the 9-5 work day. Pair them with flats and neutral accessories to make them instantly office-appropriate, whether your daytime style is quirky or sleek.
Want to see what else we loved from NYFW – and what we’re currently lusting after from London Fashion Week? We have you covered over at our Pinterest boards.

FashioniSTA File: Golden Globes 2012
Jan 16th
This year’s Golden Globe Awards was all about bold statements and futuristic flair. From silver metallic moments - that we saw on Nicole Richie and Lea Michele - to art deco details - as seen on Selma Hayek and Claire Danes - statement accents were everywhere. Even those who donned nude gowns for the occasion ramped up the drama with oversized skirts (Charlize Theron and Piper Perabo) and large-scale jewelry (Heidi Klum). And of course fringe hit the red carpet yet again, this time taking on celebs such as Emma Stone and Busy Phillips.
Ashley’s Picks
Best Dressed: Freida Pinto in a teal, textured Prada. I’ll admit that I like when actresses go more timeless than trendy, and I think this gown had the best of both worlds. The classic shape was slightly modernized with the fuller silhouette at the bottom and the smaller accents, such as the belt and her stunning Chopard lattice choker. The texture was the perfect detail to make her stand out in the best way possible.
Worst Dressed: Lea Michele in a silver Marchesa concoction. Some people have been fawning over this risky move, and I’m hoping that those people get their eyes check out soon. Instead of a smart risk, this is too over-the-top, and Lea stirs up memories of Cher in Bob Mackie.
Rookie of the Night: Shailene Woodley’s Marchesa dress was an unbeatable mix of age-appropriateness and gorgeous detail. The structured bodice with the illusion neckline was a shining example of how to dress a young Hollywood actress.
Most Improved: Nicole Kidman in Versace redeemed herself a million times over from her missteps last awards season (remember the white Dior)? From the studs to the body-hugging silhouette, this dress proved why Versace is such a fashion powerhouse.
Kim’s Picks
Best Dressed: My absolute two favorites of the night were Salma Hayek in Gucci and Kate Winslet in Jenny Packham. Hayek may get panned for her risky art-deco choice, but I thought she pulled it off beautifully while Winslet proved that Old Hollywood is always in style… her touches of gold were flawless and her clutch was a perfect match.
Worst Dressed: Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace — seriously, how dated! I am a firm believer that one can never be tooooo matchy-matchy, but Jolie’s hideous outfit tonight has shaken that belief to its core. The worst, however — hands-down — is Sarah Michelle Gellar in Monique Lhuillier. That print should never hit the red carpet, nor should it ever grace a dress so formal. You took a risk, Gellar, and it failed.
Rookie of the Night: Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen — I may not particularly like her dress, but I’ll certainly remember it. Bold lines make for a bold choice, and I’m not sure if she pulled it off or not. But it certainly caught my eye! I’d also like to nod my hat to Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci… very fitting for her character, and very well put together.
Most Improved: Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackermann… Swinton arrived last year in a questionable Jil Sander get-up that was part dress / part boardroom, but this year she made some major strides. She clearly enjoys going for a slightly androgynous look and this year is no exception. However, she softens the blow with a fabulously wild hairdo and beautiful jewelry by Fred Leighton. Baby steps, Swinton, but you’re getting there.
Kristen’s Picks
Best Dressed: Claire Danes – I have a love hate relationship with Claire Danes. Yesterday it was love. Her J. Mendel dress, coupled with simple jewelry, was nothing short of perfection, and the cut out back? Swoon.
Worst Dressed: Zooey Deschanel in Prada is my pick for worst dressed, not because of the dress necessarily, but the hair. Usually I’m all for glam throwback looks especially when it comes to hairstyles, but this custom-made bold dress deserves a simple updo.
Rookie of the Night: While I think she always looks great at award shows, my rookie of the Golden globes Goes to Sarah Hyland of Modern Family in Dolce & Gabbana. I’m all about the lace! Sarah was able to pull off an elegant strapless dress while maintain her youthful charm.
Most Improved: Laura Dern – Known for her effortlessly hippy-ish style, she kicked it up a notch this year! Her emerald sparkle Andrew Gn dress was just the right amount of classy and sexy, she looked radiant when accepting her award.
Stay tuned as we cover all of the other award shows this season!
Met Gala 2011: The Solids, the Sequins and the Sleeves
May 6th
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala is the high fashion event where the style elite can push the envelope in the hautest way possible. Unlike the Grammys where celebs show up wearing cans of tuna or weird disco sunglasses, the Met Gala showcases the true potential of designers, fashion-forward celebs and ingenious stylists. Join us as we break down the top trends, the fashion elite and the style disasters that graced the Met Gala red carpet.
Americandy
While this is a great event to showcase haute gowns and bold picks, it is also refreshing to see a group of ladies strutting their stuff in simple, streamlined ensembles by American designers. Michael Kors must have worked overtime, dressing Diana Agron (below, right), Brooklyn Decker (below, left), Emma Roberts, and model Caroline Trentini. From Brooklyn’s hot pink, high slit fierceness to Caroline’s nude, textured concoction, Kors got it right, sending out the perfect amount of American minimalism with the Met Gala-required wow-factor.
Always the American minimalist, Claire Danes showed up in a metallic Calvin Klein Collection gown, while Zoe Saldana (below, center) also donned the designer wearing a strapless pale lemon dress. Both were low-key looks, yet they managed to not underwhelm us with their fresh choices in color.
Got Something Up My Sleeve
One of the biggest trends of the night was sleeves. These stars must have finally been affected by the raging winter the rest of the country experienced, because you could not take a step without bumping into a not-bare arm. However, this trend seemed to work only on the stars who were able to keep it simple. The stand-outs of the night got this trend exactly right, including Renee Zellweger in a nude Carolina Herrera gown with just the right amount of sparkly detail on each hip. Naomi Watts also must have gotten dressed with Renee, because she too showed up in a nude gown with sparkle accents (by Stella McCartney), however hers created this ethereal feel with the illusion sleeves and light, translucent material. Gwyneth Paltrow brought the classy element back to gold in a stunning Stella McCartney, open-back, fitted gown, along with Sarah Jessica Parker in a silver, high-neck Alexander McQueen creation with the perfect silver-on-silver pattern detail. Going for a bit of a fashion risk, Ashley Olsen (below, right) encompassed the overall image of the evening in a vintage Christian Dior black gown with full, ivory, off-the-shoulder sleeves.
However, her sister, Mary Kate (below, left), missed the mark with her oversized Givenchy dress that looked like it was fit more for a trip to an Amish 1970s beach rather than a costume gala. Iman also looked like she was out of another decade a Stella McCartney gold, belted jumpsuit, and in the bad, 1980s type of way. But the biggest trend offender of the night? Christina Ricci in Zac Posen, evoking a morbid, just-raised-from-the-dead-in-a-Tim-Burton movie motif.
Surprise Designer: Topshop
When I think of the Met Ball, I think of haute couture gowns with feathers, studs, sequins and an expensive designer label attached. This year, however, three stunning starlets graced the gala in a label even we frugal fashionistas can afford. Jessica Szohr (below, center) edged things up a bit in a black velvet and tinsel minidress, while Maggie Grace (below, left) hit the red carpet in a limited-edition black gown by the mainstream label. Finally, Ginnifer Goodwin (below, right) wowed in a knotted green dress with a deep v front, which was ever so slightly overworked with the matching green eye makeup.
FashioniSTA Best Dressed: Diane Kruger in Jason Wu (left). Between her use of the illusion, sleeves and bedazzled trends, you’d think this would be a complete miss. But she managed to make it all work, evoking an old Hollywood glamour rather than a trashy mash-up of trends, which is definitely not easy to do.
FashioniSTA Worst Dressed: Fergie in Marchesa. Not only is this dress an atrocious bridal nightmare from 1982, but the overly bronzed makeup and borderline frosted hair just added to the disaster. Bring back Grammy 2010 Fergie please!
Most Improved: Rather than give this to an actual person, this award goes to Valentino’s daisies, making their big comeback as appliqués on Dakota Fanning’s tulle dress. After seeing Michelle Williams in these daisies at the Golden Globes, we thought that this trend would die a slow, painful death, but they have come back at the right event, on the right starlet, and in exactly the right way.

Zac Posen for the rest of us!
Mar 5th
Zac Posen is known for his gorgeous gowns and cocktail dresses which celebrate the feminine figure through impeccable tailoring and visionary design. His pieces are bold and eye-catching and have graced many a red carpet. The celebrities who wear them always look stunning and never end up on the dreaded “worst dressed” list.
Sadly, his work – sold at the highest price points in the high-end department stores and boutiques of the world – is unattainable by the masses…until now!
Not only has Zac Posen recently debuted his lower-priced sportswear line for Saks Fifth Avenue called “Z Spoke,” but he has also collaborated with Target to create a collection.
“Z Spoke” features easy-to-wear separates with signature Zac Posen detailing. The collection consists mostly of dresses and skirts – the items that Posen is best known for and most comfortable designing – but there is one pair of pants and one pair of shorts. The tops are simple, but useful, with a preppy vibe. The Posen-signature bold colors are evident, as is the body-conscious tailoring. Overall, I think that the collection is a success…except for maybe that name… (Thoughts? Comment above!)
For those of us with even less cash to spend, the collaboration with Go International Target is scheduled to hit the sales-floor on April 25th. The pieces range in price from $16.99 - $199.99. Again, the collection consists of mostly dresses and skirts, but the designer has included a few bathing suits, a few jackets and even a suit. The colors are fun and the silhouettes are flirty so get yourself to Target as soon as the looks arrive or I fear there will be none left!
And, of course, always remember to stop into your local STA where you may just find a Zac Posen couture or ready-to-wear piece that you can actually afford!
