Make Your Prom (or Any Special Event) Red Carpet Worthy
Mar 12th
Spring is right around the corner (according to the calendar), which means that prom season is upon every high school fashionista. Instead of blending in with every black dress that hits the dance floor, assert your style stardom by taking a cue from this year’s red carpets. This year’s trends range from pastel hues to gold embellishments, so choose a trend and dive right in!
1. Bejeweled Beauties
Another hot red carpet trend has been unexpected accessory sparkle. From backwards necklaces (hello, Jennifer Lawrence at the Oscars) to embellished brooches styled as hair clips, claim your style star status by styling your jewelry in unconventional ways. You can also kick this trend up a notch by using colored gemstones, or by doing a larger statement piece. Grab a statement necklace – like these – and finish it off with a smaller hair jewel or an oversized cocktail ring.
2. Lighten Up
If you watched any of the Oscars red carpet coverage, then you saw the endless parade of pale-hued gowns that graced the event. Trying out a pale pink, blue or gray dress is very on-trend and it is also a classic color palette that won’t embarrass you later. You also don’t need to be afraid to embrace white, you can easily pull off the trend by going with a sleek silhouette instead of something tulle-enhanced to avoid looking bridal.
3. Go Bold for Gold
Last year was all about the neon, but this year has been focused on embellishments and gold accents. Whether you’re comfortable going for gold like Kate Hudson at the Golden Globes, or you like the whole pseudo-lamé thing like Jennifer Lawrence at the premiere of The Hunger Games, this is definitely a trend for the bold. To try it subtly, go with a large, gold statement necklace, or belt a black gown with a high-shine gold belt. Don’t forget the gold-embellished clutch!
4. Matching Colorblocking
If you’re looking to go with a bright color, pair your accessories accordingly. Not only is colorblocking still a huge trend - read: a bright pink dress with a yellow or blue clutch - Another great red carpet look is matching your shoes/bag to your dress, or choosing a close shade and playing off the monochromatic look. To take on this trend with an unexpected silhouette, go with a t-shirt-inspired sleeve – like that on Nina Dobrev at the SAG Awards or Niki Reed at the Golden Globes after-party. This unexpected silhouette is strikingly modern without being too trendy.
5. Softer Shades on Your Face
Stark makeup has had its moment, but it was refreshing to see a more ethereal look on many of the red carpet stars this year. From Amanda Seyfried at the Oscars to Nicole Richie at the Golden Globes, pastel hues were a huge hit with young Hollywood. Plus, while bold makeup shades can make you look older, no one wants to look washed-up at their own prom.

Jan 14th
With another award season officially kicking off last night, we are here to weigh in on the best and worst dressed starlets hitting the red carpet. First up: The Golden Globes! From the sparkly style stars to the oh-no-it-hurts flops, Kristen, Ashley and Meghan tell us their picks of the night. Stay tuned for our takes on each awards show this season, and tell us your highs and lows on Facebook and Twitter!
The Best of the Best
Kristen’s Pick: Miranda Kerr in Zuhair Murad
I think Miranda was the epitome of old school Hollywood siren (even if she isn’t an actress…) in this is burgundy Zuhair Murad gown. If anyone could pull off a high slit and plunging neckline without making it look like they’re trying too hard, it’s her.
Honorable Mention: Kate Hudson knocked it out of the park in this McQueen number.
Ashley’s Pick: Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen
This entire look is completely flawless. From the intricate embellishment to the effortless blowout, Kate’s team was able to make her 100% relevant in this look. She was able to look completely put-together and fashion-forward without looking fussy or bizarre. I can’t even put into words how much I love this whole ensemble, it’s utterly breathless.
Honorable Mention: Kerry Washington rocked the sheer, nude and embellished trends all in one perfect Miu Miu package.
Meghan’s Pick: Jessica Alba in Oscar de la Renta
The always beautiful Jessica Alba looked maj in this Oscar de la Renta gown. The peachy color looks great on her olive skin and the breathtaking necklace breaks up the matching lipstick. Her soft curls pull the whole look together! She could have left the fluffy bag at home but I won’t hold it against this best dress nominee.
Honorable Mention: Nicole Richie’s blue patterned Naeem Khan dress looked stunning with the matching eye shadow.
Wayward Worst
Kristen’s Pick: I’m sorry but someone has to call the fashion police on Giuliana Rancic. I am usually all for classic, Downton Abby style dresses but Giulianna looks like she’s channeling Helena Bonham Carter in this goth-gone-wrong Celia Kritharioti dress. I can’t imagine G got Joan’s approval on this one.
Honorable Mention: Halle Berry is a babe, but this Versace dress was a fail.
Ashley’s Pick: It physically hurts to put Jessica Chastain in this category. I would like to officially go on record and say that I am obsessed with everything about her, all except this Calvin Klein dress. She’s a gorgeous canvas, but the fit and the hair choice served her a serious injustice.
Honorable Mention: Sienna Miller’s ode to wallpaper Erdem skirt and top.
Meghan’s Pick: Lucy Liu can pretty much pull anything off. This dress, not so much. While the silhouette isn’t horrible, the floral pattern and colors are. I do like the fullness of the dress and the fact that it has pockets (I always love leaving my bag at home).
Honorable Mention: Julianne Hough’s horrific Monique Lhuillier dress and poor makeup ensemble.
We’ll see you all in a couple weeks for our SAG Awards picks!
March Madness: Round 2
Mar 26th
If you thought Round 1 was intense, the spring style trends are back for a fashion face-off that’s better than ever. Bringing their A-game, these trends went head-to-head once again,
1. Top Knots vs. Peplum
This would have been a pretty intense street style battle, but when people realized that top knots were a little too Pebbles Flinstone, they took a detour into fashion junkie nation. Peplum was able to go mainstream, infiltrating the fashion elite and mass consumers, making it the ultimate victor.
2. Neons vs. Day clutches
A fierce battle between two trends that could become staples. One has a day-to-night multi-talent, while the other has been a spring superpower, popping up everywhere. No seriously, everywhere, try to find an editorial spread that doesn’t include Neons…you won’t. The sheer presence of this trend makes it the dominating opponent, effectively bringing the clutches to their knees.
3. Jennifer Lawrence vs. Hi-low pleats
Hi-lo pleats have their moment, but they are slowly proving to be a fleeting fashion trend instead of a superpower. With their lack of flattering powers coupled with the fact that they still remind us of mullets, made it somewhat easy prey for the recently Prabal Gurung/Marchesa-clad Jennifer Lawrence. And the fact that J.L. had a blockbuster movie come out this week and her face has been everywhere might have had something to do with the pleats’ defeat.
4. Mixing & Matching vs. Fashion Star
The fact that Jessica Simpson has managed to stay pregnant for about a year has probably partially contributed to Fashion Star’s success. While the ratings continue to grow, the dominance of Mixing & Matching is unparalleled. Between its ability to go wild with contrasting prints on the street and the editorial love of mixing neons for colorblocking, it has proved itself to be worthy of the winners’ circle from start to finish.
Stay tuned for Round 3, we’re one step closer to crowning the ultimate Spring Trend of 2012!
March Madness: Spring Trends
Mar 13th
It’s March Madness time again, but why does basketball get to have all the fun? This year we’re turning our attention to spring 2012 trends, and pitting them against each other in our ultimate style challenge. Each week we’ll bring you the rundown from the fashion competition, as we start the games with 16 major spring players. Stay tuned as the competition unfolds, it’s going to get cutthroat.
May the odds be ever in your favor!
Meet the Sweet 16
1. Neons
Likened to a “Career Trend,” it has a hidden superpower to turn into colorblocking at a moment’s notice.
Celebrity Nail Polish Lines
The latest in noteworthy nails is the influx of celebrity-based lines. In its corner is the Kardashians for Nicole by OPI, Nicki Minaj for OPI and the Hunger Games Capitol Couture for China Glaze. If nothing else, at least the Hunger Games knows how to fight.
3. Mixing & matching
You can mix prints, you can mix metals, you can colorblock by mixing solids. A solid competitor with a driving street style force behind it.
4. Crop tops
A former superstar in the ‘90s with a taste for 21st century vengeance.
5. Hi-low hemlines
New to the style game (unless you liken this to a mullet hemline…which we don’t), but it’s taking the street style world by force.
6. NBC’s Fashion Star
In its corner is a singer/designer, a model/designer, a reality star(?)/designer and a real designer. Let’s just say it’s got a lot of designing power behind it.
7. Top knots
A hairdo that has the ability to go messy or sleek, a key attribute when worn by a woman who has to look good with limited time. Which is every woman.
8. Day clutches
Another switch-hitter that has come into the running. With its larger size and diverse details, this opponent has a killer A-game.
9. Marni for H&M
A designer with a cult following. A store with a universal following. The combination will prove very hard to beat.
10. Peplum
This daring competitor has brought women everywhere a way to disguise their midsections and hips. Opponents beware.
11. Graphic prints
A new superpower has risen from basic pastel florals and springtime prints. Has the backing of designers like Altuzarra and Prabal Gurung.
12. Jennifer Lawrence
The one who took on Katniss Everdeen is out to prove she’s a style star as well.
13. Shorts/Menswear
What used to be reserved for casual wear has taken a daring turn into the formal arena. Has a leg-up with special reinforcements like tuxedo details, satin finish and a full-leather armor.
14. Mint
Saturated pastels are big this spring, and mint is definitely their all-star.
15. Pleats
This multi-faceted competitor that can go long or short when needed
16. Art Deco Jewelry
Sharp, angular designs make this competitor almost deadly, and it has additional strength when stacked.

Jan 16th
This year’s Golden Globe Awards was all about bold statements and futuristic flair. From silver metallic moments - that we saw on Nicole Richie and Lea Michele - to art deco details - as seen on Selma Hayek and Claire Danes - statement accents were everywhere. Even those who donned nude gowns for the occasion ramped up the drama with oversized skirts (Charlize Theron and Piper Perabo) and large-scale jewelry (Heidi Klum). And of course fringe hit the red carpet yet again, this time taking on celebs such as Emma Stone and Busy Phillips.
Ashley’s Picks
Best Dressed: Freida Pinto in a teal, textured Prada. I’ll admit that I like when actresses go more timeless than trendy, and I think this gown had the best of both worlds. The classic shape was slightly modernized with the fuller silhouette at the bottom and the smaller accents, such as the belt and her stunning Chopard lattice choker. The texture was the perfect detail to make her stand out in the best way possible.
Worst Dressed: Lea Michele in a silver Marchesa concoction. Some people have been fawning over this risky move, and I’m hoping that those people get their eyes check out soon. Instead of a smart risk, this is too over-the-top, and Lea stirs up memories of Cher in Bob Mackie.
Rookie of the Night: Shailene Woodley’s Marchesa dress was an unbeatable mix of age-appropriateness and gorgeous detail. The structured bodice with the illusion neckline was a shining example of how to dress a young Hollywood actress.
Most Improved: Nicole Kidman in Versace redeemed herself a million times over from her missteps last awards season (remember the white Dior)? From the studs to the body-hugging silhouette, this dress proved why Versace is such a fashion powerhouse.
Kim’s Picks
Best Dressed: My absolute two favorites of the night were Salma Hayek in Gucci and Kate Winslet in Jenny Packham. Hayek may get panned for her risky art-deco choice, but I thought she pulled it off beautifully while Winslet proved that Old Hollywood is always in style… her touches of gold were flawless and her clutch was a perfect match.
Worst Dressed: Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace — seriously, how dated! I am a firm believer that one can never be tooooo matchy-matchy, but Jolie’s hideous outfit tonight has shaken that belief to its core. The worst, however — hands-down — is Sarah Michelle Gellar in Monique Lhuillier. That print should never hit the red carpet, nor should it ever grace a dress so formal. You took a risk, Gellar, and it failed.
Rookie of the Night: Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen — I may not particularly like her dress, but I’ll certainly remember it. Bold lines make for a bold choice, and I’m not sure if she pulled it off or not. But it certainly caught my eye! I’d also like to nod my hat to Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci… very fitting for her character, and very well put together.
Most Improved: Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackermann… Swinton arrived last year in a questionable Jil Sander get-up that was part dress / part boardroom, but this year she made some major strides. She clearly enjoys going for a slightly androgynous look and this year is no exception. However, she softens the blow with a fabulously wild hairdo and beautiful jewelry by Fred Leighton. Baby steps, Swinton, but you’re getting there.
Kristen’s Picks
Best Dressed: Claire Danes – I have a love hate relationship with Claire Danes. Yesterday it was love. Her J. Mendel dress, coupled with simple jewelry, was nothing short of perfection, and the cut out back? Swoon.
Worst Dressed: Zooey Deschanel in Prada is my pick for worst dressed, not because of the dress necessarily, but the hair. Usually I’m all for glam throwback looks especially when it comes to hairstyles, but this custom-made bold dress deserves a simple updo.
Rookie of the Night: While I think she always looks great at award shows, my rookie of the Golden globes Goes to Sarah Hyland of Modern Family in Dolce & Gabbana. I’m all about the lace! Sarah was able to pull off an elegant strapless dress while maintain her youthful charm.
Most Improved: Laura Dern – Known for her effortlessly hippy-ish style, she kicked it up a notch this year! Her emerald sparkle Andrew Gn dress was just the right amount of classy and sexy, she looked radiant when accepting her award.
Stay tuned as we cover all of the other award shows this season!
White Me Up
May 31st
Memorial Day means one thing to fashioniSTAs: BREAK OUT THE WHITE! Whether it’s eyelet, summer cotton, a lightweight knit, or even leather, the warmer weather is the perfect opportunity to lighten things up. Take on this light hue by incorporating it into your wardrobe in place of other neutrals – such as black and navy. Brighten up your current outfits by adding a dose of white, guaranteed to make you look and feel summer chic in no time.
White Dresses For the Everyday
I used to only think you needed a white dress if you were graduating from prep school or getting married. While when I was graduating it was nearly impossible for me to find a white dress I liked, they have really taken over in the past few years, giving all of us a great alternative to a little black dress. For a casual daytime look, throw on a white jersey dress with a denim jacket and metallic flat sandals. To spice up your nighttime, go with a white minidress, and don’t be afraid to add embellishments, the lighter hue will keep your outfit from looking too formal. Whether it is a bauble necklace or dramatic earrings or completely embellished pumps, take white to the next level when the sun goes down by adding a little sparkle.
Also, white, lace dresses have been popping up everywhere on a variety of celebrities. Try out this look during the day with a pair of ballet flats and a low bun for a feminine ensemble. Take this into your nightlife by going with a shorter hemline and adding platform pumps and soft waves to complement the girlie lace detail.
For a summer getaway-ready look, take this trend to the maxi – maxi dress that is. A long, white maxi dress paired with oversized sunglasses and a large, bright-colored chunky necklace reads more boho than bride. Or take a cue from Nicole Richie (right) and play up the dress with gold accessories for a truly Grecian-inspired look.
Neutrals on Neutrals
Go white hot by using airy neutrals as the basis for your ensembles, and going white-on-white by mixing different variations of the shade will help you easily achieve this look.
Head-to-toe white in the same hue will read a little “hospital,” but you can make it all work if you add in complementary accents of tan, beige, yellow, gray, or even blush pink. Make a white, cotton sundress work at the office with a wider, beige belt and tan wedges. This would also work with white pants or skirt with a white top, for those of you not hyped up on the white dress trend.
Should you want to go further than just tiny touches of other neutrals mixed with white, try color-blocking your outfit using white plus another similar neutral. Trying a tan pencil skirt with a white flowy top and gold accessories will give you a timeless look with a modern flair, and with pure white on top, it won’t wash you out if you happen to have fair skin. You can also go with white jeans and a gray top (a la Kate Middleton) for a posh and preppy ensemble, pairing them with flats and a long string of pearls. Go for the girlie with a blush pink A-line skirt matched with a fitted, white tank and ballet flats. Or go with khaki safari shorts and a white tank for a casual look with an African twist. The result of all this similar matching? An effortlessly chic ensemble that transcends any age group and any style decade.
White + Bright = Summer Done Right
Wearing white to work can sometimes read a little bridal if it’s not done the right way.
Adding a pop of color to an all-white ensemble ensures that you’ll ease into this trend without feeling too overwhelmed with white. For an easy formula, take your white sundress and pair it with a long cardigan in a bold, summer shade such as royal blue or orange. Top off the look with a neutral color belt and pumps, and accent with simple gold jewelry. Should you want to mix it up more, feel free to use the white dress as your canvas and experiment with blazers, pashminas, clutches, boots, etc, all in bold hues. The contrast between the bright color and the crisp white will read as clean and streamlined no matter how little effort you actually had to exert.
Going with a stark black-and-white ensemble is also a one-way ticket to chic town. Try a black pencil skirt with a white peplum jacket for a classy corporate look, or mix textures by trying a white eyelet skirt with a sharp, constructed black top.
Pairing white with bold, summer colors is also a great way to get that instant getaway look. For a truly Saint Tropez ensemble, go with a pair of white shorts with tan, canvas espadrilles and a vibrant coral or azure top, perfect for vacation, or for bringing the vacay vibe to you. Channel Amanda Seyfried’s cool and casual look (below) to also incorporate this idea into your everyday weekend pieces, making your weekends your own mini vacations.
Now it’s up to you, fashioniSTAs, to take white from bland to bold, just use these easy steps and you’ll be white hot in no time!
